Data: Turning Research into Direction
Article: Learning
Every brand strategy starts somewhere, and too often that somewhere is a hunch. A founder's instinct about what their customers want, a rebrand built on what looks good rather than what works. Instinct has its place, but it's not a strategy. That's why my process always starts with Data: understanding what's actually happening before deciding what to do about it.
Why Data Comes First.
Skipping research doesn't save time, it just moves the risk further down the process, usually to the point where it's expensive to fix. Before any positioning, colour palette, or line of copy gets decided, I look at the market a brand sits in: who the competitors are, how they're positioning themselves, what's already been said, and where the actual gaps are. I also look inward, at the brand's own history, values, and how it's been perceived so far. Together, these build a clear, evidenced picture of where a brand stands, rather than where its founders assume it stands.
Turning Insight into Direction.
Data on its own is just information. The work is in reading it for what it means: which competitors are crowding a space, which audience expectations are going unmet, which parts of a brand's story are getting lost. That reading is what turns research into direction, the starting point for everything that follows in the 3D Methodology, from differentiation through to definition.
Data in Practice.
This played out directly in my work with This Page, where research into the agency's market position and audience shaped a strategy built on evidence rather than assumption. Understanding where they genuinely stood, not where they hoped they stood, was what made the rest of the rebrand possible.
Final Thoughts.
Good instincts still matter, but they work best when they're informed by evidence, not instead of it. Starting with Data means every decision that follows, differentiation, identity, the finished website, is built on something real. It's a slower first step, but it's the one that makes everything after it more likely to actually work.
